A powerful chaebol family in contemporary Seoul struggles to adapt to a rapidly changing society shaped by a rising middle class.

Really enjoyed this. Stone’s adaptation gets the tone just right, and the contemporary Korean setting is a very thoughtful textural touch. The cultivar of the cherry trees and the quirky architecture of the house are characterized as holdovers from Japanese colonization, which adds this interesting extra dimension - how exactly did they become wealthy? Park Hae-soo (of Squid Game fame) has real range and makes a deeply sympathetic Lopakhin. Staging’s not as elaborate as Stone’s recent Oresteia, but he’s got a really nice inside-the-house/outside-the-house juxtaposition here between the gentry and the servants. The Act 3/4 transition is suitably impressive. I didn’t have any trouble with the supertitles.
