Summary
Set in 1965 Iowa, this romantic musical centers on Francesca Johnson, an Italian war bride living a quiet, dutiful life on a farm with her husband and children. When her family departs for the State Fair for four days, her world is upended by the arrival of Robert Kincaid, a traveling National Geographic photographer looking for the local covered bridges.

Even for a one-nighter, this was so sceney. I was five seats down from Tom Hanks and Jennifer Garner and I walked out with Betsy Wolfe. (My friends on the other aisle got to chat with Phillipa Soo.) There’s something just a bit funny about going to see a musical set in a part of the country that you’re from and feeling like you’re out of place. Anyways, I thought this was great. My first time with this score and I think it’s probably my favorite I’ve heard from Jason Robert Brown; certainly not a bad way to take it in, esp. with him conducting. (My second chance to see him this year after Songs for a New World in London. ☺️) Kelli gave me goosebumps every time she opened her mouth. Steven can throw me in his pickup truck any time he likes. Super fun to watch all the creatives and MCC folks come over and hobnob with the stars at intermission. I’m just a Nebraska kid who likes to see musicals after work!
