Summary

Inspired by a real viral Twitter thread questioning Anne Frank’s “white privilege,” this satirical musical follows a progressive community theater troupe as they “correct” history by reimagining the diarist as Anita Franco, a pansexual Latinx girlboss with a hip-hop flow.

Of a kind with standard-issue strawman Twitter dunks. They’re marketing it as offensive—trigger warning everything, they proudly announce. Whether exactly it gets there and doesn’t just languish in “edgelord” territory, I guess, depends on what bubbles you inhabit. Don’t necessarily need more of this but would like to see more like this—I think that more left-aligned satire to rein in the excesses of the identity left is generally a good thing. The premise was funny, but a fair bit of it wasn’t really my sense of humor in practice. It’s worth a shot to have an informed opinion on the (minor) hype/controversy but I wouldn’t endorse it any more strongly than that and I think it’s a defensible skip.
