What I'm seeing lately!
Two young, gifted, and Black former flames find themselves crashing back into each other’s lives after years apart, navigating new secrets and old scars as they struggle to redefine their shifting borders of memory, reality, and young love.
It’s an entry in the genre of time-skipping “where did our relationship go wrong?” two-handers that distinguishes itself with 1.) two very charismatic leads with chemistry and 2.) a nice amount of texture from their Nigerian- and Congolese-British heritage, debate club background, plus the South London setting. Nice use of blocking & lighting cues to distinguish time and place jumps with only minimal set dressing. For me, it started to run aground in the last thirty minutes or so, when the charm peters out and leaves them mostly staring at each other moaning “why?” and “why not?” Something about the problems that these characters have, the specific ways they’re helping each other grow, and the box-unpacking symbolism struck me as too obvious/therapyspeak/millennial-cheugy. A few too many metaphors about burying the relationship in the ground or whatever. Love is a bird. Don’t sit on stage; super uncomfy and you can’t move for 1h45m
