It feels important to pay mention to the fact that it’s a genuine privilege to see these actors in this particular play, especially from this seat. Denzel is a dream casting for Othello and the rest are very good, too. Jake spit on me and I liked it.
I don’t think many of the choices in this production especially serve the story and this is worse than would be a straight-up, traditional version. Modernization isn’t evil but I feel like it ought to serve some compelling interpretation or story conceit. I can’t really think of even a generous reason why these guys are in GI Joe outfits in “the near future” with hip hop beats. The dialogue is left feeling extra anachronistic and it’s hard to get immersed.
