Summary

Focused on the enigmatic philosopher’s tangled personal life, this musical explores Nietzsche’s complex relationships with his controlling sister Elisabeth and his intellectual muse, Lou Salomé. The story follows his struggle to champion a life-affirming philosophy against the rising tides of anti-Semitism and nationalism found within his own inner circle, including his mentor Richard Wagner.

I went to support my friend performing in this. :) Super, super niche. Librettist-choreographer Kimerer LaMothe describes herself as a philosopher-dancer by trade and has a published book about Nietzsche’s fondness for dance imagery. (Have to imagine that she’s a very interesting party guest.) She’s written a really dense thing here that’s actually a pretty fun little geek-out and way heavier on interpretive dance than I was expecting going into it. Not for the faint of heart, but if that sounds like your idea of a good time, you have one day left to see it!
