2025 off-West End revival2027 West End transfer

A baker and his wife journey into the woods to lift a witch’s curse that has left them childless, crossing paths with Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack, and Rapunzel in a dark, interweaving fairytale about the consequences of wishes.

Tom Scutt’s scenic design for this production is just jaw-dropping - the press photos are great, but, if anything, it looks better in motion. Some of the projections have been tweaked for the better since the transfer from the Bridge, making the shadow of the giant more apparent from the stalls in the second act, but this is still where things feel a little flimsy - the lack of tactility stands out when the rest of the show is so lush and realistic. I also think the sound isn’t as clear in this old theater, but that’s not shocking.

Most of the principals have been changed out in the hop across the river, but happily the show feels perfectly intact. It sure doesn’t hurt that we retain Kate Fleetwood’s Witch and Gracie McGonagall’s Red Riding Hood, both highlights. John Dagleish steps in as the Baker, returning to the West End after winning his 2nd Olivier for Benjamin Button. But the star for me among the newbies is the comparatively unheralded Simbi Akande as Cinderella. What a voice she has. Plz sing me the phone book (or “No one is alone” works too, I guess).
