Based on Noël Coward’s Blithe Spirit, this 1964 musical comedy follows a fussy novelist whose socialite wife is accidentally killed and returns as a mischievous ghost during a séance, tormenting his new wife and turning their household into a supernatural battleground.
Come year end, I can’t imagine this is one I’ll be remembering very much at all. Probably the most I’ve seen actors on book in an Encores show. It had its moments! The premise was pretty clever. Katrina Lenk has such a charming old Hollywood glam to her that really suits an older musical like this. Andrea Martin did a lot of ad-libbing which I didn’t love, but, hey, she’s paid her dues, and she is funny. Score was fun and brassy but had some slow songs that didn’t feel like they added much.
