In a post-apocalyptic setting, the starving Eurydice is lured to the industrial, underground factory town of Hadestown by the promise of security, prompting Orpheus to undertake a dangerous journey to rescue her.

Amber Iman is the clear highlight of this cast, overflowing with personality and singing the hell out of Persephone’s comparative lack of stage time. Norbert Leo Butz and Ben Davis turn in strong efforts as Hermes and Hades, too. Unfortunately, the current leads, both crossover performers, are out of their depth and fairly uncompelling. Kayko, an alt-rock singer-songwriter, is passable as the overearnest dweeb, Orpheus - clearly more comfortable with a guitar in his hands, but at least he gets to do that. Jasmin Savoy Brown’s Eurydice, on the other hand, isn’t really in a position to succeed. A screen actress first, Brown is pleasant-voiced but completely swamped in numbers that often place her opposite the booming Hades or the Fates. The result is a pretty unbalanced iteration of the show, safe to skip, but maybe worth a lottery/TDF flier if you’re excited about the veteran names.
